How come the pope wears Gucci and Prada? Doesnt he have to take the vow of poverty?

Perhaps I slept a bit too much whilst in Catholic school but I recall something about there being a vow of poverty...

so why does the pope wear designer clothes/shoes/accessories from Prada, Gucci etc?

While I am not sure if you pose a valid question.. you make a good point. More likely, the Vatican has tailors on staff. Which seems more costly.. but it may be justified... I doubt the pope buys off the rack.

The answers is probably for the very same reason that the Catholic Church is one of the richest organizations on the entire planet. They don't always practice with their bible preaches. Most religions, especially the Catholic Church, have always been a group of excess pomp and circumstance. I helps to increase the level of self importance they have given themselves, and this in turns is done to impress the populace of the power and glory of the church.

Heck, the Catholic church is worth more than some countries entire GDP.

If they want all those worldly materials, even above and beyond what they need, that's just fine with me. But it does bother me that they are not taxed in this country and perhaps others. But at least that law seems to be evenly applied to all groups.

While this is off topic, I have to put it out there that I would like to see tax benefits for religion be repealed outright.

In short.. it's a marketing ploy.
Reply:The Pope does not wear Gucci or Prada shoes. His shoes are made for him by an independent Italian shoe maker.

The story of designer clothes are the lies of anti-Catholic bigots and you swalled the lie hook, line and sinker because it fit your own prejudice.

Take a look at your own "religious" leaders like Benny Hinn.
Reply:No as answered above the pope did not belong to an order that took a vow of poverty. Not every order does. He doesn't get a salary either but he's donated ALL the money from his books. As to the wealth of the Vatican what do you want to sell? Even Jesus did not complain about the riches in the temple in Jerusalem. It is for the greater glory of God.

Reply:Uhh, why does the Pope say that communion is to be withheld from lawmakers who support abortion and then he himself served it to Nancy P who is pro woman's choice? That makes him a politician not a leader in the church.
Reply:Very Good!

The Gucci and Prada stuff doesn't belong to him personally, it belongs to the Church. That's why he's willing to loan it out to any Catholic who asks.

/sarcasm off
Reply:Why is Vatican City lined with gold?

doesn't look that poor to me.
Reply:Really? Those clothes are designer? I never would have guessed!

Ah well, I always felt religion is a lot about hypocrisy.
Reply:He's probably been listening to those 'prosperity preachers' that have taken over the Black community, and command us to buy expensive things to show how blessed we are - all while still paying our tithes, of course.
Reply:He's privileged. It's not easy to be Pope.
Reply:New mortal sins don't apply to upper level management.
Reply:Not all Priests / Nuns take a vow of poverty ... obviously you were doing more than sleeping in Catholic school.
Reply:because he is a superstar man... lol

he is the Maddona of the church... Papa yes preach
Reply:Wealth does make good impression.
Reply:How does the pope cope?
Reply:does he own them? Did he buy them?
Reply:the designer clothes were a gift to him
